Read More TETRIS RAINS BLOCKS ON MINECRAFT Tetris turned 40 this month! To celebrate, they released an official add-on with Minecraft. Now, texture packs for properties like Halo and Skyrim have been around for years, but this Tetris add-on is the first branded one sold in the Minecraft Marketplace. This add-on merges Tetris themed weapons, armor and monsters with the Minecraft universe. But the blocky goodness doesn’t end there - Tetris is also releasing a Minecraft DLC on July 30th! Tetris is the highest selling game in history at over 520 million units worldwide. Minecraft lands second with over 300 million. This collaboration between the two top games could lead to even more sales and awareness! Read More SOUR PATCH KIDS WREAK HAVOC IN ROBLOX First they were sour, then they were sweet… now, they’re on Roblox! The extremely flavorful candy company built a game called “Mischief Tycoon!” In it, those kooky kids destroyed the land and it's up to players to rebuild it! Each mini-game is designed after candies like: Watermelon Blast or Peach Falls. There are several themed UGC items to win like a candy-coated jetpack and cape! Is anyone else’s mouth watering? The news from the metaverse this week was out of this world. There have been several exciting developments, like: Fortnite helping you build a lunar base, Disney inventing a VR treadmill and Walmart making shopping easier on Roblox! Read on for more details: VISIT THE MOON IN FORTNITE Space exploration is coming to the metaverse! Ahead of NASA’s next mission to the moon in 2026, the European Space Agency partnered with Epic Games and Hassel to create “Lunar Horizons”. In Fortnite’s new game mode, you can play as astronauts collecting samples and building a lunar base on the moon’s south pole. It’s not only fun but educational and play-tested by real ESA astronauts! The game is available to play now so definitely check it out. Read More DISNEY’S NEW VR TREADMILL Disney’s Imagineers have devised a new way to interact with VR - a 360 degree treadmill called the Holotile! Until now, walking in VR has been pretty limited, but this game changing prototype solves these issues with hundreds of tilting, spinning discs. This new technology was invented by Lanny Smoot, one of the most prolific Imagineers, who was recently inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. The Holotile is not available to the public yet, but its existence opens up a world of possibilities for engaging with the metaverse. Read More SHOP WALMART INSIDE ROBLOX Speaking of innovation, Walmart just expanded its e-commerce capabilities in Roblox. For the month of May, “Walmart Discovered” is running a pilot test for users to try out virtual items from their store and order the physical twin within the platform. As of right now, players can only buy three items: a steel tumbler, a festival bag and wireless headphones. This is the first of a series of e-commerce tests Roblox will roll out. It’s been another exciting week in the metaverse. In today's edition of Metaburst, we're covering Ikea’s new job opportunities on Roblox, McDonald’s virtual shop and a new Fortnite island that helps players fight climate change! WORK AT IKEA IN ROBLOX Ikea’s hiring…In the metaverse! By launching a job simulator on Roblox, players get to sell furniture, decorate showrooms and even serve meatballs! A select few will even be paid for their work. Ikea has offered to put ten applicants from the UK and Ireland on their payroll for 13 pounds an hour. This could be a good gig, definitely less physically intensive - is this the future of virtual work? With so many people working remotely in the last few years, we could see more job postings like this. Unfortunately, Ikea’s only offering these positions in Europe, so Americans may have to wait longer for an opportunity like this. Read More PLAY IN A VIRTUAL MCDONALD’S Speaking of virtual marketplaces, McDonald’s is also getting into the metaverse game! They are test driving a virtual store in Singapore! Called “My Happy Place”, users can build their own burgers, unveil their dream restaurant and win daily rewards. There’s even a chance to win a year of free meals! This metaverse experiment will only be live for a month from June 6th to July 7th. If it’s successful, the experience may become available in other regions. Read More FIGHT CLIMATE CHANGE ON FORTNITE You can now fight climate change in a new Fortnite Island called “Tradewater-Earthshot Parkour.” It was developed by the two companies Tradewater and Earthshot in an effort to raise awareness and inspire the younger generations to get involved. Players race to shoot toxic oil and gas wells to stop polluting the air. In the process, they learn more about the harmful chemicals impacting the real world environment. Read on for more details: MINECRAFT SERIES ON NETFLIX You may have already heard about the Minecraft movie in the works starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, but there’s also going to be a new animated series on Netflix! Over the years, Minecraft content started off with just gameplay as a narrative tool, but over time people started using more advanced animation to tell their stories. So now WildBrain, the studio behind “Sonic Prime” and “Carmen Sandiego” will be developing this series fully in CG. No release date has yet been announced. It takes a while for these games to be embraced by the mainstream, now that we have a Minecraft Netflix series, a Roblox series is only a matter of time! Read More U.S. SOCCER GETS DRAFTED BY ROBLOX FIFA World on Roblox just launched a major new update with the involvement of the U.S. Soccer Federation. Sports is a fast growing area for players on Roblox and FIFA World 1.0 was the most visited sports experience in Roblox history with over 21 million visits! While FIFA World was originally built to celebrate the last two World Cup events in Paris and Qatar, adding the “U.S. Soccer Tycoon” experience should give players more to do year-round. Players will be able to build their own stadium, create their dream team and earn rewards. The experience is available to play right now! Read More L’OCCITANE’S NEW VIRTUAL STORE L’Occitane, a major beauty products brand, just announced the launch of their fourth experience in the metaverse called ‘Greenhouse’. Past experiences include the Holiday store in November 2023 and the Ramadan store in Spring 2024. This virtual greenhouse allows consumers to check out their new range of summer fragrances in a beautiful floral environment. While the world of immersive technology still hasn’t figured out how to make smell come through the screen, this innovative way of invoking the senses through visuals gets you close! But this next crossover will make you want to crawl out of the vault - that’s right, it’s Fallout! With the release of the Fallout TV show on Amazon, the game has seen a resurgence in popularity. Fortnite teased a Fallout island and power armor from the game, but we hope there are even more items added for the regular battle royale mode. Players can expect to stock up on Nuka-Colas sometime next season! Read More META DROPPING WORKPLACE Meta made headlines this week when they announced that they’re shutting down their Workplace app. The plan is to focus on developing AI and their metaverse environment. Workplace will become obsolete starting June 2026. Users are expected to transition to Zoom’s Workvivo in the meantime. This seems like a smart move from Meta, they’re listening to the market and focusing on what’s growing - and that’s the metaverse! Read More 88RISING IN THE METAVERSE The record label, 88rising, has been making waves for the past 9 years, from Joji to Niki to Keith Ape. The group just made another splash at their music festival Head In the Clouds, in NYC. 88rising decided to take the festival into the metaverse by collaborating with two platforms: Zepeto and ZTX. Zepeto is social and chat based, ZTX builds off of Zepeto’s base by offering a way to trade and make digital assets on the blockchain.To celebrate the festival virtually, 88rising made commemorative digital collectibles. This week, we've got some music and fashion news: The Voice is joining The Sandbox, Billie Eilish is dropping new music on Fortnite, and PacSun is expanding its presence on Roblox. Read on for more details: THE VOICE X THE METAVERSE The hit reality show The Voice, where aspiring singers compete to impress celebrity coaches, is taking a leap into the metaverse with a brand new game on The Sandbox platform called “Coach Battle.” If you're a fan, you'll know that The Voice already has a presence on Roblox, HiberWorld, and Decentraland. It looks like ITV Studios, the company that owns the property’s, strategy is to be in as many online worlds as possible. That’s what Super League would suggest - put yourself where the players are. Will you turn your chair for this one? Read More BILLIE EILISH DROPS SINGLE ON FORTNITE Speaking of music, Billie Eilish is dropping her next album “Hit Me Hard and Soft” on May 17th. Luckily for us, she’s releasing her first single “Chihiro” inside Fortnite! Now that there’s Fortnite Festival mode, there’s another way for artists to promote their new music. At first, they had to do large scale in-game concerts like Eminem’s Big Bang event, but now they can do smaller jam track releases with Fortnite Festival. Players can interact with music in Main Stage mode, reminiscent of Rock Band or Guitar Hero… and Jam Stage mode, for when you just want to mess around with songs in your library and not worry about getting scored. Fortnite has even included Billie Eilish skins and skin variants! Read More PACSUN INVESTING IN ROBLOX STRATEGY Clothing company, PacSun, is building upon its Roblox success. They’re expanding their existing game and paying for advertising on the platform! “PacSun LA Tycoon” launched in February of last year and has an average of 60,000 monthly active users. The company has sustained engagement with regular updates and plans to broaden the game for their summer campaign. We’ll be curious to track how the numbers grow in a few months! This week’s edition of Metaburst saw big announcements that took the metaverse to the stratosphere. Read on for more details: LEGO X STAR WARS X FORTNITE The Fourth was with us last weekend but the Star Wars goodness won’t end there! Fortnite’s LEGO: Star Wars experience will continue through July 23rd. That’s far, far away. Help build a Rebel base and fight against the Galactic Empire! As you progress, you can get Lightsabers, Thermal Detonators and Bowcasters. There are also free and premium rewards players can get through the LEGO Pass: Rebel Adventure, all inspired by Tatooine. I have a good feeling about this! Read More NETFLIX & ROBLOX COLLAB Netflix teased an upcoming collaboration with Roblox featuring two of their biggest shows: Stranger Things and One Piece! With One Piece’s successful first season and Stranger Things’ final season coming out later this year, this is the perfect opportunity for fans to engage in-game. The teaser trailer only includes a few shots from both experiences so we’ll have to wait for more details. While the companies did not share when these will be released, we know that there will be a Demogorgon! On a scale from 1 to 10, this is going to be an 11! Read More TOCA BOCA TO GO MULTIPLAYER Move over Roblox, a new multiplayer platform is coming to town! Swedish game studio, Toca Boca, released plans to make a metaverse to rival Roblox. Capitalizing on their popular mobile app-based games, Toca Boca World and Toca Boca Jr. the company decided to make their properties 3D. The upcoming Toca Boca Days offers a new place for old fans and new players to interact. The game launches in Australia and New Zealand first, but stay tuned for a release in the US! Read More The 3D internet is ever-changing, with established platforms finding ways to continue to grow and new platforms entering the space. We saw examples of this spectrum from LEGO and Star Wars appearing on Fortnite, Netflix taking their shows to Roblox and lastly, Toca Boca stepping into the arena. Welcome to this week’s edition of Metaburst! A lot of impressive news has come out like Fortnite summoning the Force, Meta educating students, and Warner Bros crushing it on Roblox. Read on for more details: A DISTURBANCE IN THE FORTNITE Star Wars is getting another sequel…on Fortnite! That’s right, another event with the Star Wars universe is on its way ahead of May the Fourth. With the new LEGO and Festival modes, there could be a lot of galaxy goodness across the game. And of course, new skins! Maybe we’ll finally get Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian. You won’t want to miss this, and as always, May the Fourth be with you. Read More META BRINGS AR TO STUDENTS While Meta has been developing its platform for a while now, it recently revealed plans to be used by students as young as 13. With Meta’s big push into AR tech, this could help get kids comfortable with using these devices. This could become another teaching tool along with iPads and smart white boards. Some students can expect to have these in the classroom as early as this fall. Read More WARNER BROS. LEVELS UP WITH ROBLOX Warner Brothers continues to invest in games on Roblox. “Cartoon Network’s Game On” has proved to be a hugely successful implementation of their IP, generating over 34 million visits! Featuring islands and mini-games based on shows like Teen Titans Go! and We Baby Bears, they’re adding another with Gumball’s Tower of Defense. Players will be expected to team up with beloved characters and build towers to defend the town of Elmore. The game will launch in May. There’s a lot going on in the metaverse this week. Visit Coachella in Fortnite, play video ads in Roblox and learn to survive a heatwave in Minecraft! Read on for more details: Coachella on Fortnite Break out your festival wear, it’s Coachella season! If you weren’t able to nab a ticket for the music festival, you can experience it in Fortnite. This is the third year for this Epic Games collaboration, but this time, you can play your own set in Fortnite Festival, featuring themed skins and new jam tracks! But it doesn’t stop there, in regular Fortnite, there’s a whole new Sahara island to explore, and musical takeovers from Grimes and J. Balvin! So make sure to check out the event before it ends on April 22nd. At this point, I think we can count on attending via the metaverse every year. Read More Roblox Adds Video Ads The ad landscape in Roblox is evolving to video ads! While brands have been able to post virtual billboards, portals and experiences on the platform, this development could bring even more traffic. By pairing with ad-tech firm Pubmatic, Roblox will gain the capabilities for companies to air video ads for players 13 and older. While this new feature is still in alpha testing, it is expected to become available to ad buyers later this year. This presents an easier and less expensive option to engage with the platform outside of building a branded experience. Read More Survive Extreme Heat on Minecraft Can you take the heat in Minecraft? That’s a question a new educational game by Arsht-Rock asks in “Heat Wave Survival”. As the climate continues to change, information about protecting yourself and others from extreme heat is imperative. This game hopes to educate kids about the warning signs as they travel around the world, help others in danger, and fight against the Heat Dragon. It’s been an eventful week in the metaverse! An Anime anomaly is bending the world in Fortnite, clothing brand Afro Unicorn dropped some new threads on Roblox and students in Miami are now collaborating globally with others in real-time. Read on for more details: Avatar: The Last Airbender x Fortnite The iconic series, “Avatar: The Last Airbender” is gradually unfolding into Fortnite in a hotly anticipated collaboration. Current series protagonist, Korra kicked things off as a playable character in the latest season pass and just recently, a mysterious frozen island materialized just off the shores of the game map’s northeastern corner. This island should become available on April 12th. Players who invest in the upcoming “Elements” Pass will unlock the frozen OG airbender, Aang along with a corresponding Lego variant. Read More Afro Unicorn Soars Onto Roblox! Another trendsetting lifestyle brand has galloped its way into the metaverse! The course “Architecture in the Metaverse—Global Problems” isn’t just a lesson in tech; it’s a masterclass in breaking down global barriers. While students have enjoyed being able to interact with their classmates from both countries, the time difference for the Indian students has proven to be a bit of a challenge. They dropped a capsule collection of merch including hoodies, shirts, and the limited edition vinyl. Sales did so well, the album ended up on Billboard’s Top Vinyl and Top Album sales charts! With success like this, more artists may be tempted to collaborate with Fortnite on exclusive vinyl.
